  • How long can an ensete m. be dry stored in a wine cellar?

My ensete maurelii is in its second year and has grown enormous. It is still growing strongly but we will have frost after Hallowe’en and I will have to bring it in. Last year I dry stored it in my cool and dark wine cellar until February, when I put it in a sunny window where it did quite well. It is now so big that I would rather leave it in the wine cellar until mid May, when I can plant it outside. Craig (or anyone else), do you think it would be all right in dry storage for such a long time?

It may struggle for that amount of time, but plants often surprise us! If it’s your only option it might be worth experimenting. 🤞 Alternatively I’d be tempted to pot it up as a houseplant around March time similarly to how you did last spring (albeit on a larger scale).

    Craig,

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I could cut back the pseudostem a bit so that it doesn’t grow too large as a houseplant. As much as having a wine cellar is great, I think I’d rather have a greenhouse (or both!)
