With most of my hosta being devoured by slugs and snails last year I’m giving Brunnera Macrophylia – Siberian bugloss a try.

I like the saxifraga stolonifera too, but I’ve been trying to encourage it to trail over the sides of a hanging basket rather than use for ground cover – will defo try it with some of its runners this summer. Also really like the wild ginger, but it’s not grown much/covering much yet.

I think some of my favourite ground cover is where moss has just appeared, also ‘mind your business’ (mines a container garden, so I don’t have to worry about it infesting a lawn or anything). I also let herb Robert self seed around the base potted trees etc, where a lot of other ground cover plants would struggle to grow. Another favourite is this selaginella – growing underneath some farfugiums. Like a lot of people I have a love/hate thing for hostas – I have settled for moving them (and putting Brunnera in their place) underneath a fatsia where it won’t annoy me too much if the slugs get them again 🙂

Looks great! Have you tried Geranium palmatum? Its hardier than Geranium maderense, but with similar flowers. It self seeds like Herb Robert but is much more exotic in appearance. 🙂
