Another good shrub for autumn colour is Hydrangea quercifolia. The one in my garden is the cultivar ‘Alice’, which reaches a height of about 2 metres. The large leaves are very attractive, as are the white panicles of flowers in early summer. In very late autumn the leaves turn shades of burgundy and remain on the shrub well into winter. This photo was taken on October 12 and the leaves haven’t begun to change colour.
