Craig, I agree that rhus typhina has wonderful, reliable autumn colour. They are a very common wild tree in Canada and are always a blaze of orange and red no matter what kind of weather we’ve had. I also grow an excellent dwarf sumac called Tiger Eye (Rhus typhina ‘Bailtiger’). The finely dissected leaves start out chartreuse before turning a bright yellow for the rest of the summer (they do not turn green). In the fall, the yellow changes to bright red and orange.
